The Collegium Celebrated Its 31st Anniversary on 9 September

On the 9th of September, the Swedish Collegium celebrated the 31st anniversary of its foundation
with a combined lecture and concert event in the Thunberg Hall. The audience who had gathered
on the occasion included a broad mix of people representing different parts of the history of the
Collegium as both current and former Fellows, as well as old and new colleagues and friends
attended the festivities.

Following the welcome address given by SCAS principal Björn Wittrock, Hans Rott, who was a
Fellow in residence in the spring of 2016, held the anniversary lecture. Rott is Professor of
Theoretical Philosophy at Universität Regensburg and spoke on the theme On Norms and Facts
of Reasoning

The second part of the evening consisted of a concert; Anna Randelin (English horn), Matteo
Magnani (violin), Helga Löfvenius (viola) and Moa Pontén (cello) performed Johann Sebastian
Bach’s The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (selection; arrangement for string trio by Dmitry
Sitkovetsky) and Quatuor pour cor anglais, violon, alto et violoncelle by Jean Françaix.

The Swedish Collegium was founded on 9 September 1985 as the first institute of its kind in
Northern Europe. During the past 31 years, approx.. 430 Fellows have been in residence. So far,
their work has resulted in some 450 books, many with leading university presses, and some 1150
scholarly articles.
